Oxfordshire T&F Championships 3000m 2013

Correction : Unofficially, it seems that the announcement of a 10000m championship, in the general Championships prospectus, was a mistake. It can’t be confirmed yet, but the most likely thing seems to be a 3000m race in the traditional manner, during the Town v Gown match – which despite appearing on the University Athletics Club’s website as 5 June, will apparently take place on 12 June. We still need to finalise judges, and to confirm the race with the event organisers, and then it will be possible to officially publicise it. More news when it has been fully clarified.

Week Commencing 29 April 2013

Congratulations to Steve Uttley who I think was 4th in the National 20k at the weekend !

Training on Monday 29 April : 10k-ish on the Radley Lakes Loop, done easy or as a fartlek.

Training on Wednesday 1 May : threshold session on laps of the estate.

Beginners’ and easy sessions also available.

Training at the weekend : we should do 12.5-15k. Does anyone want to suggest anything?

Racing  : nothing on Saturday or Sunday, but there is the annual Pednor 5 miles race, over a hilly course near Chesham, on the Bank Holiday Monday.

Rest Day Boredom Busters (above) – any article on female endurance metabolism added.

County T&F Championships 2013

The following seems to be the current state of play as regards walks events in the local County Track and Field Championships.

Berkshire : no championship advertised.

Buckinghamshire : no championship advertised. However, as previously, the Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire championships are being organised together, and there IS an Oxfordshire championship – see below. Perhaps if representations were made to the Bucks AA, they might be prepared to recognise the same race(s) as Bucks championship events ?

Hampshire : a 3000m race in the main Track and Field championships, to be held at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth, on 25 May. The provisional timetable has the race at 11:55. Closing date for entries, 6 May.

Oxfordshire : a 10000m championship has been announced, incorporated in the BMAF 10000m championship at Horspath on 23 June. This is a change from previous years, and has some plus points – e.g. the race will be fully judged – and some minus points – e.g. the longer distance may discourage those not training regularly. The announced closing date appears to be 6 May. Unless I get the strong impression that we don’t want a 3000m championship, I propose to lobby so that we ALSO get our now-becoming-traditional 3000m championship race, incorporated in the Town v Gown match – which is Wednesday 5 June this year. As in the past, I’ll hope this can be an open race so that people outside the county get their once-a-year chance to race a the famous Iffley Road track. CORRECTION : here.

Week Commencing 22 April 2013

Training on Monday 22 April : drills, conditioning and flexibility exercises, and 200m repetitions on the track. For today’s exercises PLEASE BRING AN EXERCISE MAT OR BLANKET OR SIMILAR – otherwise you’ll be doing them on the grass !

Training on Wednesday 24th : threshold session on laps of the estate.

Beginners’ and easy sessions also available.

Training at the weekend : if not racing, we should do 12.5-15k. Does anyone want to suggest anything?

Racing midweek : Wednesday,  6:45, there is a 10000m track race at Tooting Bec.

Racing at the weekend : the National 20k, which ome of us have entered, is at Coventry at 1.30pm on Sunday. Second race in the National League. Only recommended if you have trained for the distance, but entries are open until Tuesday. Details here.

Did you notice? There is a new page above, ‘Rest Day Boredom Busters’ – links to interesting / instructive stuff, to check out when you have the time. Latest addition is a piece on massage by a leading sports physio – what all the different sort of sports massage can do for you.

Week Commencing 15 April 2013

Training on Monday 15 April : drills, conditioning and flexibility exercises, and a sheer speed session on the track.

Training on Wednesday 17th : threshold session on laps of the estate.

Beginners’ and easy sessions are always available.

Training at the weekend : if not racing, we should do 12.5-15k. Does anyone want to suggest anything?

Racing midweek : with the lighter evenings, evening races are startingto appear. First is a 2000m race at the BRAT Open Graded Meeting at Birmingham University, at 06:45 on Wednesday. Details here.

Racing at the weekend : two possibilities on Sunday. There is a 3000m race in the annual Birchfiled Open event at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham, but the time is unclear. Details, such as they are, here. For those who want to travel further afield, there is probably the last ever opportunity to race at the Don Valley Stdium, Sheffield, with a track 10,000m at 1.30 pm.
