Week commencing 14 August 2017

Exciting but mixed day on The Mall on Sunday – no luck for Tom or Dom, solid work from Callum and Bethan, gutsy work from Gemma but a break in her string of PBs over 20k.

Training during the week :  on  Monday, 10k-ish fartlek. On Wednesday, threshold session on laps of the estate. Plus beginners sessions on the track if required – normal track fee will apply.

Training at the weekend : if not racing, should do a distance session. Any suggestions ?

Racing at the weekend :  On Saturday at Crystal Palace, the SEAA T&F Championships over 5000m. You will need to have entered by now, and if you have, you have probably been sent the timetable.

Racing during the week : Nothing anywhere close.

World Championships Week

Training during the week :  on  Monday, 10k-ish fartlek or recovery. Plus beginners sessions on the track if required. On Wednesday, track session for everyone – normal track fee will apply.

Training at the weekend : if not racing (you will know whether this means you), should do a distance session. Any suggestions ?

Racing at the weekend :  No open races because of course on Sunday, the walks events in the IAAF World Championships take place in The Mall, London. 50k (men and women) starts at 7:45 am, 20k women (with Oxfordshire interest of course) starts at 12:20, 20k men (where there is possibly Britain’s best medal chance) at 2:20 pm. Free to spectators.

Racing during the week : on Wednesday at mid-day, the ‘Enfield Friendship Walks’ organised by Ron Wallwork to tie in with the World Championships. Races of 1 mile, 3 miles and 5 miles, at Queen Elizabeth II stadium, Donkey Lane, Enfield. Full details on the Enfield League website.

Festival of Race Walking, Hillingdon, Sunday 1 October

The Festival of Race Walking, which we have been to in the past, is set to return to Hillingdon on Sunday 1 October, starting at 10:30. 20k and 10k races for seniors, standard distances of 5k and below for juniors. No championships, but a high standard is likely as the 20k is a qualifying race for a number of events including the Commonwealth Games next year. Week commencing 10 April 2017

Grainy pic of Gemma competing in the Czech Republic on Saturday, where as I’m sure we all know, she finished (in 10th place) in a time that qualifies her for both the Commonwealth Games next year, and this year’s World Athletics Championships in London !

Training during the week :  on  Monday, 10k-ish fartlek. On Wednesday, track session with warmups, drills, intervals and warmdown. Usual track fee applies.

Training at the Bank Holiday weekend : if not racing, should do a distance session. Any suggestions ? How about the 12-mile-ish annual Radley Walk, on Good Friday ? Details here .

Racing at the Bank Holiday weekend :  track races at 10:45 at Tonbridge, Kent, on Easter Monday.

Racing midweek : There is a 10k track race at Tooting Bec, South London, at 6:45 pm on Wednesday.

Week commencing 3 April 2017

The Headington-Abingdon contingent at Gravesend, and the Abingdon contingent at the Greater Manchester Marathon, last weekend ! Well done all !

Training during the week :  on  Monday, easy session after the weekend races. On Wednesday, track session with warmups, drills, intervals and warmdown. Usual track fee applies.

Training at the weekend : if not racing, should do a distance session. Any suggestions ?

Racing at the weekend :  Only one within anything like reasonable travelling distance – Saturday at 1 pm, 6 and 8 mile walks in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk – a course taster for the Centurions race in August.

International : Congratulations to Tom Bosworth, 2nd in the IAAF Challenge race at Rio Major, Portugal, at the weekend – joins Dominic King in qualifying for the World Championships.

Racing at the weekend :  On Saturday at 1 pm, the Cecil Gittings Memorial races at Gravesend, which also count for the Enfield League. Some of us are going! More details here.

International : Congratulations again to Ian Richards on another silver medal in the World Masters 10k last week – and to the  team of Ian, Peter Bosko and Roger Michell, who won the M65 gold. Plus Dominic King, qualifying for the World Championships with his performance in the 50k race at Dudince, Slovakia on Saturday.
