Training this week : on Monday, easy or fartlek session up to 10/11k. On Wednesday : hoping to go on the track, for agility/balance/co-ordination, drills and sprints. Agility/Balance/Co-ordination will require an exercise mat and warm clothing. But at the moment the weather forecast isn’t great for Wednesday, so come equipped for road work (i.e. hi-viz clothing) on both days.

Training at the weekend : Should do a distance session if possible. Any suggestions?

Racing at the weekend : Doesn’t seem to be any.

Active Rest month continues. For more about Active Rest, read this.

Training this week : on Monday and Wednesday : more agility / balance / co-ordination based on the UK Athletics “Athletics 365” programme. Full details here. On Monday, if you have them, please bring an exercise mat, and a yoga strap or piece of rope or something similar. On Wednesday, a mat and a ball (tennis ball or similar). Cones and a running ladder will also be needed, I believe they’re available at the track. Track fee will apply. Have extra layers to wear as it will not be very energetic.

Training at the weekend : Do something involving some distance – cycling ? jog a parkrun (Oxford, Abingdon, Banbury, Bicester, Witney or Didcot) ?  a ramble (the Ramblers have a 12.5-mile walk in the Chilterns, from near Princes Risborough, on Sunday, and other options) ? or similar.

Racing at the weekend : on Sunday, the second fixture in the Midland Winter League at Alexander Stadium, 5k and 10k races starting at 12:30 : full details here.

With the major competitions of 2018 now over, we’re going to do like the proper athletes do and treat October as an Active Rest month. To take a bit of a break from race walking, rest and recuperate, and come back fighting fit for winter training in November. For more about Active Rest, read this.

If you do any race walking in this period, it should be gentle, no stress on the joints, muscles or tendons. If you do any races, it should be to be sociable rather than to be competitive, don’t worry at all about the times. Training that we do on the Monday and Wednesday sessions will focus on developing our ‘ABC’ – agility, balance and co-ordination – valuable abilities in any branch of athletics that often get neglected during normal training. We’ll be following the UK Athletics “Athletics 365” programme, well the first 10 sections of it. Details here. (I can read this without entering my coaching login, so I’m guessing you can too. Please let me know if you can’t.)

Training this week : on Monday and Wednesday : agility / balance / co-ordination. Please bring an exercise mat, if you have one (otherwise we’ll use the black mats at the track which can be a bit unpleasant if they’re wet), and a ball (tennis ball or similar). Track fee will apply. Have extra layers to wear as it will not be very energetic.

Training at the weekend : Do something involving some distance – cycling ? jog a parkrun (Oxford, Abingdon, Banbury, Bicester, Witney or Didcot) ? a ramble (the Ramblers have a 10-mile walk from Witney on Saturday, among other options)? or similar.

Racing at the weekend : the first Midland Winter League fixture of the season, with races for seniors over 5k at 1 pm and 10k at 2.25 pm, is at Stourport on Saturday. Details here.
