Week commencing 26 July 2021

QuickTechniqueCheckOverall situation : Oxford City remains an ‘enhanced response area’ due to the level of Covid infections, and people are advised not to travel into and out of the city.

England Athletics’ advice has changed as a result of the removal of legal restrictions, but they emphasis personal responsibility and a responsibility to maintain healthy training and competition environments. Many clubs and venues are continuing their attempts to maintain Covid-secure environments unchanged, e.g. there is no change to Tilsley Park’s clubs-only policy for use of its track.

The current EA advice is here.

Training this week : on Monday,  a 10k-ish session. On Wednesday, speed and technique on Copenhagen Drive.

Racing this week : On Tuesday evening, a 3000m race in the Woodford Tuesday Walks series at Ashton Playing Fields, East London. Enter by midnight on Sunday, by emailing Peter.Cassidy@btinternet.com.

Training this week : training sessions will be uncoached and you are free to make whatever arrangements you like. I would advise continuing the pattern of recent weeks with a 10k-ish session on Monday and  speed-and-technique on Wednesday. Further advice available via the WhatsApp group.

Racing this week : None within reasonable travelling distance.

Closing dates : Next Sunday is the last day to enter the Woodford Tuesday Walks 3000m on Tuesday 27th, and the England Athletics U15 3000m and U17 5000m championship races in Manchester on 7/8 August.

Week commencing 12 July 2021

QuickTechniqueCheckOverall situation : Oxford is now an ‘enhanced response area’ due to the level of Covid infections, and people are advised not to travel into and out of the city. However there is no travel advice for Oxfordshire outside the city.

At national level nothing has officially changed yet and England Athletics’ current advice is here.

Training this week : as long as Oxford stays in this status, training sessions will be uncoached and you are free to make whatever arrangements you like. I would advise continuing the pattern of recent weeks with a 10k-ish session on Monday and  speed-and-technique on Wednesday. Further advice available via the WhatsApp group.

Racing this weekend : Three events on Sunday. The England Athletics T&F Championships at Bedford include the usual 3000m race and is believed to include the Inter-Counties Championships – you will need to have entered by now. The England Masters Athletics Association Inter-Area T&F Challenge is at Nuneaton, and usually includes a 2000m race – you will need to have been selected for this. And there is an open masters’ 3000m race in the Surrey and Sussex Masters Championships at Kingsmeadow, Richmond – you will need to have entered by now.

Racing during the week : On Tuesday, the next in the Veteran’s AC series of 5k races in Battersea Park, and on Wednesday, a 3000m race in the Cambridge Harriers open meeting. For each of these, you will need to have entered by now.

Week commencing 5 July 2021

QuickTechniqueCheckOverall situation : No change of course, and the ‘return to normal’ is postponed till at least 19 July. Indoor training in groups of 6 and outdoor training in groups of up to 30 are permitted, under a Covid-secure environment, and there are no travel restrictions within England. However with one coach, general BA policy means there is a limit of 12 athletes. Tilsley Park do not seem to be changing their policy of making the track available for club bookings only, so it remains unavailable to us. Iffley Road and Horspath tracks are open, but are not available at our normal training times. There are some gym / leisure centre classes with small numbers.

England Athletics’ current advice is here.

Training this week : on Monday, 10k-ish on the Radley Lakes loop.  On Wednesday, speed and technique on Copenhagen Drive. Both sessions flexible, depending on who turns up and what state they’re in !

Racing this weekend : No open events within reasonable travelling distance.

Closing dates : You have until Thursday to enter the Veterans AC’s 5k race at Battersea Park on Tuesday 13th. Enter here.
