Week commencing 22 April 2024

Training this week : on Monday, 10k-ish on the roads, or less for those returning to training. It will still be dark when we finish so lights or hi-viz please. On Wednesday, on track for exercises, drills, sprints and stretching. Track fees are now £4 for U18’s, £5 for 18’s and over. Plus, on each day, beginners’ sessions on the track if required. If required on Wednesday, then there’ll be something else for everyone else.

Racing next week : on Thursday 2 May, at 6:30 pm, a 1500m race at the Ashford AC Open meeting in Ashford, Kent. More details here, enter here by 1 May.

Racing this week : on Saturday, it’s the National RWA 10k Championships and the Young Athletes national championship races, at Leicester, but you’ll need to have entered by now.

Training this week : on Bank Holiday Monday, 10k-ish on the roads. It will be dark when we finish so still lights or hi-viz please. On Wednesday, on track for exercises, drills, sprints and stretching. Track fees are now £4 for U18’s, £5 for 18’s and over. Might change depending on the weather.

Racing this week : none.

Racing next week : on Saturday 20 April, it’s the National RWA 10k Championships and the Young Athletes national championship races, at New College Cycle Circuit, Leicester, starting at 11 am. Full details here. Enter there by the end of Friday 12 April. There’s a 70-minute time standard for the 10k races.

Training this week : on Monday, 10k-ish on the roads. On Wednesday, sprints of 50, 100, 150 and 200m on Copenhagen Drive. Hi-viz and/or lights please. Shorter / easier options for anyone returning from injury.

Racing this week : On Saturday at Moulton, Northamptonshire, the England Athletics Winter Racewalk Championships, with a 10000m race for seniors, 5000m for U17’s, and 1000m for U15s. Plus supporting U11 race and runs. All races are open, but there are time limits on the 10000m race. Full details and online entry here. Enter by Tuesday.

Racing this week : on Saturday at 5pm, the 3000m race in the British Masters Indoor Championships at Lee Valley, London. On Sunday at 1pm, the 3000m race in the UK Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham. For both of these, you need to have entered by now – there will probably be live coverage of both races.

Racing next week : on Saturday 24th at 11 am, the next event in the Enfield League series. Full details in the current Enfield Walker. And on Sunday 25th, at Lee Valley, London, provisionally at 4:05pm, a 2000m race in the England Masters Inter-Area competition. You will need to be invited for this.

Racing next week : on Saturday 17th at 5pm, the 3000m race in the British Masters Indoor Championships at Lee Valley, London. Enter here by Wednesday 7th. And on Sunday 18th at 1pm, the 3000m race in the UK Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham. If you haven’t already entered you might have a few hours left to do so – details here.

Closing dates : today is also the last day to enter the European Masters Indoor Championships in Torun, Poland, on 17-23 March. Features indoor 3000m races and outdoor 5000m races. More details here.

Training this week : on Monday, back to usual with 10k-ish on the roads. On Wednesday, 3 x 1000m on laps of the estate. It’s expected to be cold. Hi-viz and/or lights please.

Racing this week : on Saturday at 10:30am, this year’s Enfield League kicks off at Donkey Lane, Enfield, with races up to 10k. Plus presentations to the winners of last year’s League. Details here, enter here. On Sunday at Coventry, probably from 12 noon, the final event in this year’s Midland Winter League, with races of 5k and 10k. Some details here, enter using this form. Racing next week : on Saturday 20th at 2 pm, races of 5k, 10k and 15k near Steyning, Sussex. Be ready to leave the Steyning AC clubhouse at 1:30. More details expected soon.

Closing dates : Saturday is the last day for over-35s to express interest in representing the South in the England Masters Inter-Area Indoors match over 2000m on 25 February.

Week commencing New Year’s Day

Training this week : on Monday, Tilsley Park is closed. I suggest meeting outside TP for an easy post-break 5k on the roads. Or, the Bank Holiday may be an opportunity to train in the daylight earlier in the day. Anyone want to suggest anything on the WhatsApp group ? On Wednesday, back to usual with 10k-ish on the roads. Racing this week : on Saturday in Sheffield starting at 11:45, three races over 2000m and 3000m for the England Athletics Indoors titles. You will need to have entered by now. There is no known live coverage, yet.

Week commencing 13 November 2023

Training this week : on Monday, there will be an uncoached session, as this is the evening of the Southern Race Walking Association Annual General Meeting. Those who turn up, can decide what they do. On Wednesday, I’m suggesting a session of 3 x 1k on laps of the estate. Remember lights and/or hi-viz clothing.

Racing this week : on Saturday at Tonbridge, Kent, the Southern Race Walking Association Championships over 5000m, with shorter championship races for U17’s, with races starting at 11:30 am. These are also the Surrey Walking Club Open races, and count for the Ray Hall Winter League. Full details in this month’s Race Walking Record – enter here by Wednesday.
